I hope to use the time to develop some new challenges, and to spend some time touring in the campervan to find some new and undiscovered locations...

The more I've become engaged with event organisation, safety, and delivery - the less I've been involved with actually being out in the hills, which is, afterall, why I started Merseyventure. So hopefully I can rediscover my fitness, and will still be attending events - but out on those remote checkpoints, in the wind and rain...

Stephen will be taking over all of the event organisation for our 'Open Challenge' and 'Open Bus' events, and most bespoke events too. You can contact Stephen on stephen@merseyventure.com

The four dates, all open to teams of 4 walkers, aged 18 years or older, are:

Saturday April 14th 2012
Saturday May 26th 2012
Saturday July 7th 2012
Saturday August 18th 2012

As ever, we have kept the entry cost low, at £35 per walker, with absolutely no fundraising requirement - but you are, of course, free to raise funds for any charity or good cause of your own choice.

The event is fully supported by our professional mountain staff, Sport Ident timing chips, recovery points for injured/fatigued walkers, and has a social BBQ at the finish..!

Limited camping and bunkhouse accommodation is available at the start/finish venue - first come first served...

]]><![CDATA[Scottish Three Peaks Challenge]]>Mon, 02 May 2011 15:26:05 -0800http://www.merseyventure.org/1/post/2011/05/scottish-three-peaks-challenge.htmlHere at Merseyventure, we are always looking for new challenges and adventures. Given that money is very tight at the moment - we have been trying to develop a mid-level challenge, with minimum driving costs, but still involving the whole team, and also useful as training for anyone preparing for a national Three Peaks Challenge.

Well, we've created our very own Scottish Three Peaks Challenge.

This event includes some 26 miles of walking, 3,500 metres of climbing, and only 200 miles of driving. Teams can use their own vehicles, or fly to Glasgow International, then hire a cheap rental car for the two days.

Teams will climb Merrick in the Galloway Forest Park, then Ben Lomond in the Trossachs, and finally climb Ben Nevis in the Highlands. For most teams the target time is around 18 hours.

We are keen to find some willing volunteers to try this challenge out, so we can start organising a formal challenge for 2012. If you fancy a go, and have a group of 4-8 walkers, then please get in touch... ;-)

Well done to everyone who attended our Three Peaks Challenge Training Weekend over 26th & 27th March 2011.

Many thanks also to Julian and Stve from Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team who gave the group a safety talk during the Safety & Planning Sessions on Saturday.

The weekend is designed for people who are wishing to organise or take part in a Three Peaks Challenge during 2011, wether that is a Merseyventure organised event, a private event, or a charity challenge.

The weekend includes a Safety, Planning and Navigation session on Saturday, followed by a night climb of Scafell Pike - then a daytime climb on the Sunday. 20 walkers took part in the epic and adventuruous night-time climb alone during 26th March.

We are able to offer bespoke training events for groups of 8 or more walkers or organisers upon request. Please contact us with your requirements.

19th Feb 2011 - Well done to everyone who completed this challenge...

Weather reports for the weekend suggested very wintery conditions, with high winds, hail and snow. The predictions were not wrong. All of the walkers were up by 6.30am ready for their breakfast (cooked by our Merseyventure staff) in the bunkbarn, and the bacon and eggs were good preparation for the 13.5 hours of pain in front of them. At 7am, as I went outside of the bunkhouse in Horton-In-Ribblesdale, the large snowflakes were blowing horizontally across the car park. It was going to be a hard day...

The team was made up of 12 walkers preparing for their national Three Peaks Challenges later in the year, and this was the perfect training event..! 25 miles of inhospitable weather... Loverly ;-)

The light was just beginning to draw over the car park as the team departed, at 7.30am, a little behind schedule as Tony donned his many warm layers. Keith aslo joined the group at the start.

Our support vehicle was waiting at Ings Farm to offer warm drinks after Pen-Y-Ghent and the 'moss', and then again with soup and pasta at Ribblehead. Carl and Henry (dog) now joined the team as they climbed up into the mist and snowline again, heading for Whernside.

The next meeting was at Philpin Lane, along with a rather unfriendly local farmer. Philpin Lane is a public road with public rights of way, and is maintained by the public purse, despite his protests that it belongs to him..! The team were keen to carry on, and strode off towards Ingleborough as light faded.

13 hours and 30 minutes later, every one of the team triumphantly arrived at the bunkhouse, completing their winter challenge - very well done..! This was very good going in what can only be described as truly 'challenging' conditions.

Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge - in winter..!

On Saturday 19th February 2011 we are organising a fully guided walk of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. This can be a truly fantastic experience at this time of year.

Our package includes Friday & Saturday night accommodation in the bunkhouse at Horton-In-Ribblesdale, breakfast on Saturday morning,  your personal guide who will stay with you throughout the challenge, support vehicle with hot drinks at various points, and a medal for all finishers.
